After a few months of suspiciously restrained behavior, blackjack savant Don Johnson has returned. He was spotted in October in Atlantic City stuffing fistfuls of casino chips into his gullet. Just grinding them up between his world-class molars. No, I made that up. He was actually cashing in fistfuls of chips at the Tropicana Casino and Resort—$2 million worth of them—to be precise. The Press of Atlantic City reported the news last week:

Tropicana has promoted high-stakes table games play as the centerpiece of its casino operations in recent months. The volatile nature of table games wagering has helped Tropicana at times but injured during others, particularly in October.

“Last month we were the windshield, this month we are the bug,” Rodio said. “We’re going to have some great months and some months when we get beat up.”

Yes, you are. The months you get beat up are the months when Don Johnson is playing. Last April, Johnson beat up the Tropicana for $5.8 million, part of an run that saw him savage Atlantic City casinos for $15.1 million in six months.

The Atlantic City paper says Johnson is now “an international celebrity dubbed the ‘Beast of Blackjack’,” but we still prefer to think of him as “The King of Champagne,” the docile creature who Nebuchadnezzers of bubbly, sprays them on his adoring fans, and then grabs a mic and screams, ”DON MOTHERFUCKING JOHNSON! DON MOTHERFUCKING JOHNSON!”

What do you get when you combine the “wedding capital of the world” and one of the luckiest numbers in blackjack? More than 3,500 weddings in Sin City on 11/11/11, of course.

On Friday Nov. 11, couples from across the U.S. will descend on Las Vegas, the unofficial “wedding capital,” to state their “I Do’s.” After they’ve tied the knot, over 3,400 couples will head over to the Tropicana Hotel and Casino for what is being billed as the world’s largest wedding reception.

The Tropicana event — which will host the city’s newest newlywed couples in a group wedding reception — is the first of its kind in Vegas.

The event is the brainchild of Tiffany Masters, a Kansas native and noted Vegas event planner, who designed the event to be a destination for couples who have nowhere to go after getting hitched.

Masters came up with the idea for a mass reception to re-write the story of her own woeful wedding night at the city’s Chapel of the Flowers 15 years ago: “I [have a place to go] when I got married here,” Masters told HuffPost Weddings.”I sat there and ate a cheeseburger watching my now ex-husband gamble on the tables with my ex-father-in-law and thought, ‘This is it?’ So this is my vendetta — to throw the world’s largest wedding reception. I feel that [the couples] deserve it.”

As an ordained minister, Masters says she may even perform a few ceremonies herself.

“We’ll do it drive-through style where we’ll go up to the bar, slam a shot and I will make sure they get officiated and they can still enjoy the reception,” she says. “I am ordained, and I will have some ordained ministers on hand that night to make sure there aren’t any crying brides.”

Former deputy prime minister Lord Prescott’s private office spent hundreds of pounds of taxpayers’ cash in a casino in Australia, it has been disclosed.

Documents released by the Department for Communities and Local Government show a government credit card was used to spend £456 at the Star City casino, £490 at a seafood restaurant and £75 at an aquarium during a visit to Sydney in 2004.

The figures were revealed as ministers prepared for the release of details of spending on departmental Government Procurement Cards (GPCs) – charge cards used by staff to make small-scale purchases.

Cabinet Office minister Francis Maude more stringent controls on use of the cards – including a crackdown on first-class travel – had resulted in a £45 million reduction in the amount spent over the first year of the coalition Government.

And new restrictions limiting civil service bonuses to only the top 25% performers have reaped a further £15 million since April this year.

Lord Prescott told the Daily Telegraph he had never had a Government credit card and was surprised at the spending by his officials, but believed it must have been to cover food and drink during a visit to Australia to study the relaxation of casino licensing laws.

But housing minister Grant Shapps stated it showed “a cavalier attitude to the public purse” under the Labour government. Under reforms introduced by the coalition, all transactions above £500 made on departmental GPCs from April this year will be made public.

Mr Maude said: “We inherited an unprecedented deficit and are doing all we can to address waste and increase scrutiny on Government expenditure.

“We need to be able show taxpayers that every penny we spend is being used efficiently and we must open up our books so people can see for themselves where their money is going. Transparent government is totally essential to restoring people’s trust in the political system.”
